Losing a pet is challenging and heartbreaking for any loving pet owner. Whether you’ve said “Goodbye” to a faithful dog, a cherished cat, or another beloved pet, you can be overwhelmed with grief. After a loss, you will need to navigate a range of emotions and find ways to honor your pet’s memory—also, to take care of yourself. Our compassionate Veterinary Behavior Solutions team understands that losing a pet is devastating, and we offer ways to help you cope and heal.

#1: Allow yourself to grieve your pet

Each pet owner processes grief individually, including the time they need to navigate the initial pain. It’s essential to recognize that the loss of a pet is a significant event that can trigger a wide range of emotions, including sadness, anger, guilt, and if your pet was suffering, relief. Allow yourself to feel these emotions without judgment or pressure to “get over it.” Grieving is a natural process, and it’s OK to take as much time as you need to mourn your pet’s passing.

#2: Seek pet loss support

Surrounding yourself with understanding people after a loss is integral to healing since we are social creatures who need support, comfort, and a listening ear. Don’t hesitate to discuss your feelings with friends, family members, or support groups who also have experienced pet loss, understand your unique bond with your furry friend, and can provide comfort and validation. If you’re still struggling to cope independently, consider speaking with a therapist or counselor specializing in grief counseling.

#3: Memorialize and honor your pet

Finding meaningful ways to honor your pet’s memory can be therapeutic. After your pet has passed over the rainbow bridge, consider the following ideas to show reverence and memorialize your pet:

  • Creating a collage or photo album featuring pictures of your pet
  • Planting a tree or flower in their honor
  • Donating to a local animal shelter or rescue organization in their name
  • Hosting a memorial ceremony with others who loved your pet
  • Scattering their ashes in a natural area your pet loved
  • Writing a letter or poem expressing your love and gratitude for your pet

#4: After losing your pet, maintain a routine and schedule

Carrying on after a loss can be complicated, but maintaining a normal routine can help. Ensure you get enough sleep, participate in your regular activities and exercise, and eat nutritious meals. You may not feel like it, but caring for yourself is crucial. Stay busy and connected, such as getting together with friends for dinner or walks. These small routines can help you get through the worst days by improving your mood and maintaining your day-to-day life.

#5: Spend time with pets

All animals, whether they’re cats, dogs, birds, or other pets, can lift your spirits. Pets are natural healers, because they require nothing but your presence. Consider volunteering at a shelter or rescue or fostering a pet who will love nothing more than to be with you. Caring for pets is a beautiful way to instill meaning and purpose in your day, and they will appreciate your love and care, too. When the time is right, consider adopting another pet. While no pet can ever replace the one you’ve lost, opening your heart to a new furry companion can bring joy and companionship back into your life. Giving another four-legged friend a loving home can be a wonderful way to honor the memory of your beloved lost pet.

If you’ve lost a pet, there’s no right or wrong way to grieve. Take things one day at a time, be gentle with yourself, and allow yourself to heal at your own pace. With time and support, you will be able to move forward with your life while always cherishing your pet’s memory.
